How to Prepare for your Interior Painting Project

When it comes to interior painting, one major goal for any painting contractor is to ensure that the process is as simple and stress-free for the customer as possible. Between procedures, planning, communication, and the on-site team, every aspect plays a role in ensuring your project goes as smoothly as possible.

There are some general guidelines that we recommend to homeowners to prepare for your upcoming interior painting project and help prepare your space for the work to be completed.

Here’s a checklist we share with painting customers to help prepare for painters to arrive and ensure the project can progress smoothly and efficiently.

  • Disconnect wiring from computers, TVs, stereos and any other electronics that are plugged in within the space thats going to be painted.
  • If your TV is mounted on the wall, it will need to be removed prior to the painters arriving.
  • Any wall decor that is hanging on the wall should be removed as well. If you’re planning to re-hang items in the same place, you can leave the hardware in the wall. Most painters will remove it and replace it for you.
  • Clear off any counters, tables, and shelves in the area to be painted.
  • If a closet is being painted, be sure to remove any belongings and clothing in them.
  • If you’re having your cabinets painted, be sure to remove any items within the cabinets.
  • Large items such as clock and pianos that cannot be removed can be left in place, but should be moved into the center of the room so that your painters can work around them.
  • Remove any blinds, curtains or draperies from windows
  • While most paints are low-VOC, it’s best to remove pets from the home if possible so they aren’t affected by the smells as they tend to be more sensitive to them than people. If they cannot be removed from the home, be sure to put them somewhere secure.
  • Be sure to leave any emergency contact information just in case we need to reach out.
  • Be sure to leave time for a pre-project and post-project walkthrough with your Crew Leader at the beginning and end of the painting project.

While this isn’t a definitive list, it’s a great starting point for anyone who is having painting work done on their home’s interior. If any items aren’t possible for you, or you have questions, please let us know and we’d be happy to assist however we can.
